Enthusiastic to become a full member of the European Union, it has been impossible for Turkey to achieve this without many, often far-reaching, reforms, not least in the area of human rights. Since its formal candidature in 1992, much progress in that direction has already been made. However, the country still has a long way to go, but legal, economic and many other reforms are well on the way.
Since the foundation of the Turkish state in 1923, the governing principles of the country have always been those of rationalism and enlightenment. Furthermore the state has since then been secular in nature. Thus certain worries concerning the risk of Islamic militancy spreading throughout the country are to a great extent overstated and security is becoming less of an issue.
All recent members of the European Union have seen significant gains in property prices since their entry, and as Turkey now waits in the wings, property values are already showing serious signs of movement upwards. There is no reason that, upon becoming a full member of the Union, property prices in Turkey should not follow the course of the other recently-admitted members ever upward!
So if you have ever considered investing in Turkish property, now is a very good time. Particularly well worth considering are well-situated properties in the major cities. Those in Istanbul should be given high consideration. Prices are soon likely to follow those in the major cities of other new member states. That is to say, ever upwards!
In summary, whilst one can not deny that Turkey still has a lot of progress to make before being accepted into the European Union, one thing is almost certain - the day will come, sooner or later, when Turkey does become a full member. So it is important to get in early while prices are still attractive and all the best deals have been snapped up.
Many international businesses have already set up shop in Turkey, enthusiastic to get in early and to start developing their markets in the country. The result has been a large increase in demand for rental properties, particularly in major urban areas. In fact by air, Istanbul is only a very short flight indeed from several major European capitals. This in itself is an important business advantage.
Of course, besides business, Turkey has for years been a not unimportant tourist destination, since it possesses some of the finest sandy beaches in that part of the world. But upon entry into Europe, Tourism is also likely to flourish even more. This will of course in turn increase the demand for properties in the many tourist spots found throughout the country. The result of course will be a growth in prices in resort areas all around the country.
With regard to tourism, Turkey has much to offer. Obviously there are the long sandy beaches, but that is far from all. Turkey is a culturally rich nation of great antiquity, a treasury of ancient sites and stunning visual vistas. Everyone has heard of the famous Blue Mosque and treasures of the Topkapi palace in Istanbul, but the country contains much more than that lesser known treasures, ready to be discovered.
But a look at Turkey can never be complete without at least a mention of wonderful Turkish cookery. Turkey is far more than the ubiquitous Turkish delight, popular throughout the world. A meal prepared in one of Turkey's spotless kitchens is really a delight from start to finish, with succulent plates of tender meat and fresh vegetables of the highest quality, followed by one of a huge range of sweet deserts, then washed down by a brewed-to-order coffee or tea, a Turkish meal will delight the pallet of even the most jaded of gourmet travellers.
